The Clifton 9 earned its place fast. Cushion that reads as generous without going soft, and a fit that settles in like it was already broken.

4.5/5 Excellent

Pros

  • Lightweight feel relative to substantial cushion volume
  • Breathable, smooth engineered mesh upper with flat, non-irritating lacing
  • Midsole foam offers genuine rebound, not just compression
  • Meta-rocker geometry promotes natural forward roll on pavement
  • Understated colorway wears well beyond the run

Cons

  • Toe box runs slightly narrow at the widest point — not ideal for wide feet
  • Exposed foam patches on forefoot outsole may wear faster on rough pavement

Extended Observations

The Clifton 9 earned its place fast. Cushion that reads as generous without going soft, and a fit that settles in like it was already broken.

The Clifton 9 earns its place. I pick it up and the first thing I notice is how light it reads against its bulk — the foam is substantial but the shoe doesn't carry itself heavily. That contrast is the whole promise of the Clifton line, and version 9 delivers on it without fuss.

The upper is a fine-mesh engineered knit, smooth against the back of my hand. It breathes. The collar is padded just enough to feel deliberate without turning stiff after an hour. The lacing sits flat and doesn't dig. These are small things that compound over miles.

Underfoot, the midsole foam has a compression that rewards a midfoot strike — there's give, then rebound, not just give. The early-stage meta-rocker geometry rolls the foot forward with a rhythm that feels coached rather than forced. On pavement, the rubber outsole grips cleanly without the drag of an overcautious compound.

The Black/White colorway is quiet and workable — it reads as a shoe that isn't trying to announce itself. Wear it with running kit or a pair of straight-leg trousers and it disappears into the outfit the right way.

Two notes of caution: the toe box, while roomy enough for most, runs slightly narrow at the widest point — wide-footed runners should try before committing. And the outsole rubber coverage leaves a few foam patches exposed at the forefoot, which could wear faster on rough urban surfaces. Neither is a dealbreaker. This shoe does what it says it will do, and it does it quietly.

Our Verdict

The Clifton 9 earned its place fast. Cushion that reads as generous without going soft, and a fit that settles in like it was already broken.
